비오틴(Biotin)은 비타민 H 또는 코엔자임 R로도 알려져 있으며, 1916년 배트맨(Bateman)에 의해 발견된 수용성 B 복합체 비타민(비타민 B7)입니다. 이는 ureido (tetrahydroimidizalone) ring와 tetrahydrothiophene ring가 융합된 구조로 이루어져 있습니다. tetrahydrothiophene ring의 탄소 원자 하나에는 valeric acid substituent가 부착되어 있습니다. 비오틴은 지방산, 이소류신, 발린 합성의 코엔자임이며, 당생성 과정에서도 역할을 합니다.

Glycoprotein avidin과 비오틴 사이의 높은 친화력(10-15 M-1)은 친화성 크로마토그래피, 국소화, 면역진단, 핵산 검출 등 다양한 생물분석 응용 분야에 활용되어 왔습니다. avidin-biotin 기술의 핵심 특징은 biological probe나 matrix를 biotinylated derivatives로 사전에 공유결합 수정한 것을 필요로 합니다.
